Jack Butland, goalkeeper, will be out of action for the first match of the 2022/23 seasons due to injury. Summer signing Sam Johnstone will also be absent. Vicente Guaita, 35 years old, will now be responsible for goalkeeping duties.
The Eagles are also without James McArthur, so Michael Olise is an injury concern. It remains to be seen if Chris Richards, the new center-back, will make it into the starting line-up. He will need to replace Joachim Andersen and Marc Guehi, the incumbent central defenders.
